CVC Santa Ana:

#comadredesmadre

I’ve been asked to lay down some words regarding the CVC Santa Ana banner I created, pues . . . This story begins in 1997: I am spending the summer visiting family in Los Altos de Jalisco. I am a seventh grader and my older, teenaged cousins are diligently sewing handkerchiefs to sell on market day. As I dig what they’re doing, they show me the basics and away I go for the next 20 years, sewing things mostly for family, myself, and the few lucky friends who are worth the trouble.

Cut to summer 2017: Yellow Blackbird asks me to create a banner for CVC Santa Ana. I have 100% freedom to do whatever I want and I have zero ideas! A few weeks pass and a friend asks a favor—to pick up her little sister from a girls’ day camp, Chicas Rockeras of South East LA. I do. Their check-in table is covered in a beautiful mantel bordado. I am immediately transported to my nana’s house. CRSELA could have used any old tablecloth, but they never miss an opportunity, however small, to remind us of where we come from—they’re fantastic like that!

I go back to Yellow Blackbird with the idea of creating a banner, completely crossed-stitched, for CVC Santa Ana. She thinks I’m crazy, I go ahead anyway. I begin in July 2017. In October 2018, the banner is taken by my parents to the same village in Los Altos where I first learned to sew and my Tia Carmen adds a red crocheted border. I continue working on the banner until January 2019. A total of 546 days.

Thank you to everyone who supported this project through your kind words and by attending CVC Santa Ana events. I love you all very much!
