Chulita Sleepwalk - Cumbia Del Recuerdo

‘Los tiempos pasan pero quedan los recuerdos
Y hay unos que son muy difíciles de olvidar
Yo tengo muchos que son viejos y los conservo
Porque son historias bastante setimental’

Although my family migrated to the US when I was very young, I have very vivid memories of my time living in Mexico City and experiencing Sonidero culture in the early 90’s. Mexico’s Sonidero culture is a unique DJ tradition that goes back to the 1960s and is influenced by tropical music from around the world. It is about the music as much as it is about the connection between the Sonideros and the audience.

Till this day, I can still hear the deep echoes of the voices, the heavily used effects, the melodies of the accordion and the bass bumping from the sound systems. This mix of old and new cumbias is dedicated to everyone who has had to leave their home in search for more opportunities for their families. It is dedicated to those recuerdos and to the family I’ve lost in the 27 years I haven’t been back.
